What is WATCH D.O.G.S.?
WATCH D.O.G.S. is a national program focused on family and community engagement in schools. WATCH D.O.G.S. use their presence in the school to support academic instruction and learning readiness. They are also an extra set of ears and eyes to enhance school safety, reduce bullying, and provide a greater sense of campus security.
Who are WATCH D.O.G.S.?
Although the national WATCH program is geared towards male family members and mentors (e.g., fathers, grandfathers, uncles, father figures), at Niwot Elementary *All are Welcome.* Therefore, anyone who is interested in being a positive adult role model for our NES students is welcome to sign up and volunteer.
NEW THIS YEAR! The national WATCH D.O.G.S. program also includes M.O.M.S. (Moms of Marvelous Students)! **Again, any positive adult role model (dads, moms, grandfathers, grandmothers, aunts, uncles, father figures, mother figures) is welcome to volunteer!**
What do WATCH D.O.G.S. do?
All WATCH D.O.G.S. will spend at least one full school day at Niwot Elementary volunteering in various ways. During the day, WATCH D.O.G.S. may read and work on flash cards with students, play at recess, eat lunch with students, watch the school entrances and hallways, assist with traffic flow, and any other assigned activities. WATCH D.O.G.S. will actively engage with ALL students in the building.
On the day of their participation, WATCH D.O.G.S. are given a brief orientation in the morning and then will be provided with a schedule of volunteering activities. All WATCH D.O.G.S. will wear an official t-shirt and/or name tag identifying them as WATCH D.O.G.S.
What are the benefits of the WATCH D.O.G.S program?
•Students gain positive adult role models and schools gain an extra set of eyes and ears.
•Adults get a glimpse of their students’ everyday world and learn about the increasingly complex challenges and decisions that students face in school. As a result, adults can learn to relate better to their students and connect with them on a deeper level.
•Adults gain a greater awareness of the positive impact they can have on their students’ life in three critical areas: academic performance, self-esteem, and social behavior.
